CICLO SCHOOLS Partners Gather in Thessaloniki for Strategic Planning

On September 19th and 20th, 2024, the CICLO SCHOOLS project partners came together for a two-day meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece. Hosted by Stimmuli, the event focused on reviewing the progress of the project, defining the next steps, and planning future activities to further support Education for Sustainability (EfS) and Circular Economy (CE) education. The discussions covered multiple work packages, with special attention given to curriculum development and teacher training initiatives. Partners shared their experiences, brainstormed innovative ideas, and explored strategies to effectively implement the CicloSchools curriculum in schools across participating countries. The meeting ended with a strong commitment from all partners to continue working collaboratively and ensure the project’s success.

Focus Groups Highlight Challenges and Best Practices for Teaching CE Focus groups conducted in the Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, and Germany shed light on the obstacles and best practices for teaching CE in schools. Participants discussed time constraints, budget limitations, and the complexity of CE topics as key challenges. To overcome these barriers, teachers suggested integrating CE into existing subjects, using project-based learning, and collaborating with local businesses for hands-on experiences. Best practices also include using real-world examples, multimedia aids, and fostering interdisciplinary connections. These insights are instrumental in shaping the CicloSchools curriculum to be both practical and impactful.

Survey Results: Teachers’ Perspectives on Circular Economy Education

As part of WP2 activities, an online survey was conducted to better understand secondary school teachers' views on Circular Economy (CE) practices. The survey received 110 responses from teachers in Greece, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Germany. Results revealed that teachers see CE education as a valuable tool for preparing students for the future but face challenges in incorporating it into already packed curricula. Key topics identified for CE education include waste management, resource efficiency, sustainable consumption, and practical applications in industries like agriculture and fashion. The findings will guide the development of future teaching resources and support materials.
